Mathematical equation finally answers whether triangle or square-cut sandwiches taste better

While personal preferences keep adding to the age-old debate about perfectly shaped sandwiches, mathematics seems to have explained why the dish tastes better when cut into triangles than squares.

There has been a lot of discussion about the right way to cut a sandwich, regardless of what it’s made out of. And if you enjoy eating triangle-cut sandwiches too, simple logic explains your liking for the specific shape.

Why a sandwich tastes better when it’s cut diagonally

Several studies were conducted over the years to find the reason behind the enhanced taste of a sandwich triangle in shape.

One of the possible explanations is the two 45° corners, allowing you to bite further into the middle of the sandwich loaded with the filling.

This means you’re experiencing less crust and more filling as opposed to the square shape, which is surrounded by more crust.

Furthermore, the pointed edges make it easier to dip them in anything – highly beneficial for those who enjoy ketchup and sauces with every bite.

BuzzFeed points out that the hypotenuse length – the longest side of the right triangle – maximizes the tongue-to-sandwich-filling contact area. So you may experience a burst of flavors with every bite.

The triangle shape of the sandwich provides an obvious grab zone at the corner where two ends meet, unlike in a square cut, which is comparatively harder to hold.

The last point isn’t justified by a mathematical equation, but a sandwich shaped like a triangle is undeniably aesthetically more pleasing than any other shape.

TikTok users argue over triangle and square-cut

The food debate doesn’t seem to ever rest. Now and then a new video about the ideal shape of a sandwich prompts more discussions on the platforms like TikTok and users are quick to weigh in on it.

One user argued: “I can never trust people who cut their sandwiches in squares.”

“Triangle feels fancy and square feel poor,” added another.

A third user argued: “I have tried different shapes and only triangle tastes the best.”

“It really doesn’t make a difference, but with rectangle 2/3 of the perimeter is crust as with triangles, the hypotenuse has no crust,” opined one.
