Sunderland should target 'amazing' Blackburn Rovers ace who really impressed on Wearside - opinion

Sunderland should make a summer move for one player who really impressed in their defeat to Blackburn Rovers.

Sunderland looked to make it two wins in a row on Easter Monday as they faced relegation-threatened Blackburn, but were humiliated by a mixture between their quality in attack and our horrendous defending.

We made a number of errors to gift them their goals, while our defenders moved around the pitch like they had been stuffing their faces with easter eggs all weekend.

Blackburn netted five goals at the Stadium of Light, but there was only really a couple of players that stood out.

One of which was a former target of ours, Sammie Szmodics. The attacker is the top scorer in the Championship with 23 goals and was simply too good for the Black Cats – but he has come so far since we were previously linked with him that there would certainly not be a chance of him making the move to Wearside now.

However, his teammate Tyrhys Dolan is definitely one player we should look into signing this summer.

The 22-year-old joined Blackburn in 2020 and has since netted 19 goals and provided 16 assists.

Why should Sunderland sign Tyrhys Dolan?

Dolan really stood out on Wearside earlier this week, bagging a goal and an assist, as well as making two interceptions, two tackles and two successful dribbles.

The winger is a star we have encouraged Sunderland to sign previously, but his brilliant display against Mike Dodds‘ side makes the prospect of signing him even more exciting.

Dolan is currently out of contract this summer but Blackburn do have the option to extend his deal by a further year, while reports have claimed they are working on tying him down to fresh terms.

Rovers do look a lot more likely to stay up after Monday’s win, but Sunderland shouldn’t let that prevent them from trying to claw Dolan away from Ewood Park.

If he chooses not to sign a new contract with Blackburn then he could be an ‘amazing’ free transfer signing who adds great threat to our struggling attack, while he can also play all across the front three.

With Jack Clarke leaving and Patrick Roberts looking far from his best self, Kristjaan Speakman desperately needs to invest into some new attackers and Dolan could be a brilliant addition.

He did attract interest from Luton Town earlier this year though, so Sunderland would have to be prepared to open their cheque book if they were to tempt him to move to Wearside over other clubs.
