Rangers give update on special Walter Smith tribute plans, timeline given

If anybody was deserving of a statue for their services to Rangers, then it is the late, great Walter Smith.

The legendary former Ibrox boss – who won a quite astonishing 21 trophies with the club over two spells – is one the names most synonymous with Rangers.

A leader and a winner in every sense of the word, the Rangers community was rocked when Walter Smith sadly passed away in October 2021.

Now, there’s been an update on plans to honour Walter Smith with a statue at Ibrox.

Walter Smith statue to be unveiled this season

As quoted by prominent Rangers fan account Michael Seafarer, Rangers have updated fans via an advisory board regarding the situation.

Claiming the statue is in the “final stages of development”, it very much sounds like an official announcement on the Walter Smith tribute is close.

Rangers fans are excited about the permanent tribute to one of the club’s greatest ever managers and the unveiling is guaranteed to be a memorable occasion.

Going by the update, that day appears to be close with Rangers hoping to unveil the Walter Smith statue before the end of the season.

The quote reads:

“The statue is in the final stages of development and discussion is taking place with the family with regard to a date for the unveiling before the end of the season.”

Walter Smith’s Rangers achievements

  • 10 league titles across two spells, secured 9IAR in 1997
  • 5 Scottish Cups
  • 6 League Cups
  • UEFA Cup Finalist 2008
  • Record in first spell (1991 – 1998): 380 games, 249 wins, 68 draws, 63 defeats (65.53% win record)
  • Record in second spell (2007 – 2011): 246 games, 155 wins, 53 draws, 38 defeats (63.01% win record)

A fitting tribute to a Rangers legend

Rangers aren’t a club to produce statues without genuinely proper cause and this tribute to Walter Smith is a testament to his contribution to the Ibrox side.

The only statue at Ibrox Stadium is that of John Greig, which stands as a tribute to those who lost their lives in the 1971 Ibrox disaster.

If there is anyone from the modern era of Rangers Football Club who deserves to accompany such a tribute, it’s Walter Smith.

One of Scottish football’s greatest ever managers – no mean feat given the legacy of the nation’s footballing leaders – Walter Smith will forever remain a legend to the Rangers support.

A statue of the great man at Ibrox will stand as a permanent reminder of Walter’s success and commitment to the club he loved.

Rangers announced plans for the statue a year on from Smith’s passing to “commemorate his incredible achievements at the club”.
