Three Gers stars scrapping for one place, Clement call could be game changer

Philippe Clement has something of a dilemma ahead of the biggest Old Firm derby for years with Rangers looking to hit the front in the title race.

The Gers boss hasn’t been rotating his squad quite as often in recent weeks, although at Ibrox at the weekend he will need to make a decision in a key position.

After losing his first Old Firm derby, Philippe Clement will want to make things right this time around and put Rangers in pole position, there is one big question though.

Philippe Clement has Rangers Old FIrm call to make

The defence picks itself if Ridvan Yilmaz is fit, the decline in Borna Barisic recently has been worrying and his last two performances have been poor.

He was subbed in both games.

In midfield, it is a similar scenario with John Lundstram, Mohamed Diomande and Todd Cantwell all proving to be the best players in their respective positions.

For the first time in what seems like an age, Clement has a decision to make in his forward line.

Cyriel Dessers was outstanding against Hibs and has, largely, done well for the gaffer and will lead the line.

Only fitness has seen Dujon Sterling not start on the right-hand side recently and it would be a surprise to not see him in the manager’s starting XI.

It is a different story on the left-hand side though.

Fabio Silva didn’t have his best game against Hibs last weekend but impressed against Benfica when there was more space.

Then, Rabbi Matondo came off the bench and reminded everyone just how dangerous he can be too.

He has eight goal contributions in just under 10 games in terms of minutes.

No wide player other than Abdallah Sima has contributed more.

Could Abdallah Sima make dramatic return to starting XI?

Which brings us to the Senegal international.

Clement gave him some minutes through the middle against Hibs and the 22-year old showed that the time out hasn’t affected his pace with a last-minute effort that just drifted wide.

However, we all know that he has done his best work on the left, 16 goals in 33 appearances is proof of that.

Silva will be the fittest, but Matondo can’t be far behind given that he was back in full training before the international break.

Sima will have another week’s training under his belt and could be pushing for as much as 45 minutes, or even longer.

It’s a tough decision to make but, for once, it is one that Philippe Clement will be glad to have as his options improve and the quality available to him increases.
