'Negotiations are taking place': Liverpool now leading the race to hire 'brilliant' manager - journalist

Liverpool are now leading the race to hire one of Europe’s most talented managers – with negotiations ongoing.

That is according to respected journalist Pedro Sepulveda.

Michael Edwards – CEO of Football at Anfield – has been forced to look elsewhere in the hunt to replace Jurgen Klopp, after Xabi Alonso announced his decision to stay with Bayer Leverkusen.

Now – however – it sounds like Liverpool are making progress with an alternative to the Spaniard…

Liverpool leading race to hire 39-year-old

Well – according to Sepulveda – Liverpool are leading the race to hire Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP.

Talks are said to be taking place between Liverpool and the Portuguese tactician right now.

It speaks volumes that the Reds are in pole position to hire Amorim, as he is one of the most in demand managers right now after Alonso decided to stay in Germany.

The Independent believe Barcelona are rushing to try and hire the man from Lisbon, as the Spanish giants aim to beat other clubs in Europe to his signature as a replacement for Xavi.

However, that same report suggested that Bayern Munich also want Amorim, as it states those who were focused on Alonso are now turning their attention to the Sporting CP boss.

Sepulveda wrote on X: “Liverpool are leading the race. Negotiations are taking place.”

Amorim has Sporting CP sat top of the Primeira Liga with 68 points – one ahead of Benfica while also holding a game in hand.

Michael Edwards could hire a “brilliant” manager

If Edwards manages to lure Amorim to Merseyside, the appointment would seemingly come with Jamie Carragher’s approval.

The Liverpool legend has already called the Sporting CP boss a coach of “great pedigree” while adding that he is doing a “brilliant” job in Lisbon.

Carragher told CBS Sports: “He’s been in that role, he’s been talked about as a young, up-and-coming coach, great pedigree and doing a really brilliant job right now. He’s top of the Portuguese league.”

Amorim would represent another dip into the Portuguese market for Liverpool following the big-money additions of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez from Porto and Benfica respectively.

Clearly, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) see plenty of value in targeting that part of the globe, so be sure to keep an eye on this situation as talks with Amorim continue.
