'Understand...': Danny Rohl now wants to 'extend the stay' of Sheffield Wednesday duo - journalist

Two Sheffield Wednesday gems could be in line for new contracts ahead of the summer and next season.

This current Sheffield Wednesday first-team could be very different-looking to the first-team next year.

As things stand, 18 players are set to leave Sheffield Wednesday this summer, including a horde of out of contract players and several other loan players.

It’ll leave Dejphon Chansiri with a monumental rebuilding task, with not only a playing team to rebuild but also a coaching team to potentially rebuild too.

Sunderland are interested in Sheffield Wednesday Danny Rohl, and the Black Cats could even poach Rohl’s backroom team if they hire him.

Names like Barry Bannan, Di’Shon Bernard, and Josh Windass are all out of contract in the summer; Rohl though is keen on securing new deals for those three players.

Elsewhere, veteran Liam Palmer is among those out of a deal, as well as Will Vaulks and Cameron Dawson among others.

Then there’s the loan contingency who’s set to leave; Ike Ugbo, Ian Poveda, Jeff Hendrick, Ashley Fletcher, Momo Diaby, Kristian Pedersen, and James Beadle.

But there’s also some youngsters out of contract in the summer.

Recent reports have revealed that Luke Cook and Adam Alimi-Adetoro are set to leave Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, whilst Sam Reed is set for a new contract.

And Joe Crann now says that Joey Phuthi and Favour Onukwuli are set for new contracts, with the pair also out of contract in the summer.

Both players shone in a recent development team win over Wigan Athletic.

New contracts for Joey Phuthi and Favour Onukwuli

Sheffield Wednesday fans got a glimpse of Phuthi earlier in the season.

The 19-year-old made his Championship debut against Coventry City in December and then played the Sky Blues in the FA Cup.

He also made his debut for Zimbabwe last month.

Onukwuli meanwhile is yet to make his first-team debut, but Crann’s report says he’s also held in high regards at Sheffield Wednesday’s Middlewood training ground.

And with relegation looking like a growing possibility, Phuthi and Onukwuli could well be fast-tracked into the first-team ahead of next season.

Chansiri seems unlikely to break the bank this summer and so the youth team could be raided for new first-team players, and the likes of Phuthi in particular will be among the first to be called up.

Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday return to action with a crunch match away at QPR on Saturday, though a win could lift them out of the bottom three.
