‘Bring me back’: £4m defender says he regretted leaving Tottenham a day after being sold

Leaving a football club you love is never an easy decision.

Indeed, there are certain parts of a life of a footballer we don’t envy, and the quickfire nature of the transfer market is certainly one of those.

One day you’re settled with your family and friends at a certain club, the next you’re being whisked away to another city with a whole new group of people.

Now, one player Tottenham Hotspur sold a few years ago has admitted just how much he regretted leaving Spurs at the time, claiming he wanted Daniel Levy to re-sign him the very next day after he was sold.

The defender who regretted leaving Tottenham

Michael Dawson had established himself as a real fan favourite at Spurs, but in 2014, he had to leave the club as Mauricio Pochettino wanted to make wholesale changes.

Dawson joined Hull City in a £4m move, and, speaking on Off The Shelf Podcast, the defender says he regretted leaving Tottenham the very next day.

“I was 30 when Mauricio came in, and they wanted Fazio in and they wanted me out of the door. The chance to move north, the day after I’d signed I was thinking I wish I could phone Daniel saying can you send the money back and bring me back. It was like that, it was hard, then we got relegated. It was an emotional time leaving here, I’d been here for nine and a half years,” Dawson said.

Michael Dawson’s difficult move

We can absolutely understand why Dawson regretted leaving Tottenham.

Let’s be honest, Hull City aren’t the greatest club in the world, and it’s a huge culture shock moving from London to East Yorkshire.

Dawson didn’t have the best of times at Hull, ultimately getting relegated with the Tigers, while Mauricio Pochettino proved to be rather revolutionary at Spurs.

Sometimes football can be a cruel game, and in this line of work, you often have to make decisions that don’t suit you on a personal level, and this is certainly an example of a player who was forced to leave a club before he was ready to.
