Motorola reveals new Edge 50 phones, and all three are coming to Europe

Aside from the foldable Razr line, the Edge series is Motorola’s most well-known range of smartphones. And the Lenovo-owned brand now has a new generation in the form of the Edge 50 series.

Three models are coming to Europe this time: the Edge 50 Fusion, Edge 50 Pro and flagship Edge 50 Ultra.

However, what exactly does each phone offer, and when will they be available to purchase? Here’s everything you need to know about the Edge 50 series.

When will the Motorola Edge 50 series be released?

Initially, the Edge 50 series launched on 3 April 2024 in India, ahead of it being released there on 9 April 2024.

The global launch didn’t take long, though – it took place on 16 April 2024.

The whole series will be available to buy in the UK, starting with the Edge 50 Pro being available to buy today directly from Motorola, plus via Amazon, Currys and John Lewis.

However, both the Edge 50 Ultra and Edge 50 Fusion will go on sale “from mid-May” without a specific date. There’s no word on a potential US release, either.

As expected, they came at a similar time to last year’s models. For context, here’s when recent models launched in Europe.

How much does the Motorola Edge 50 series cost?

Here’s the starting prices for the phones in Europe, including the UK:

The Edge 50 Fusion is competitively priced, costing less than both its predecessor, the Edge 30 Fusion, and the weakest of the previous generation, the Edge 40.

The reintroduction of the Ultra model has also stirred up prices a little. The Edge 50 Pro is no longer the most powerful in the series and its price has been reduced relative to the Edge 40 Pro.

The Edge 50 Ultra will cost you an extra £150 over the Pro model from last year. However, its price is still less than the £999 Pixel 8 Pro and £1,249 Galaxy S24 Ultra, which will be the main rivals to the Edge 50 Ultra in terms of AI features.

In addition, when purchasing the Edge 50 Pro and Edge 50 Ultra, you will receive brand new Moto buds+ worth £129. However, purchase of the Edge 50 Pro includes a gift of Moto buds worth £49. These gifts will be available on launch of their respective phones.

What specs and features does the Motorola Edge 50 series have?

As the Edge 50 series has now been officially revealed in Europe, we have confirmed specs for all three phones. Here’s what you can expect from them.

Motorola Edge 50 Pro

The Edge 50 Pro has a sleek design with contoured edges, an aluminium frame and options for vegan leather or pearl finish. It also boasts an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.

On the front, it sports a near-borderless 6.7-inch 144Hz pOLED display with Full HD+ resolution and HDR10+. It also includes a peak brightness of 2000 nits and Pantone-validated colours for enhanced accuracy. Notably, it includes a 50Mp front-facing camera with autofocus and an in-display fingerprint scanner.

On the rear, there’s a 50Mp main camera with OIS, 10Mp telephoto lens offering 3x optical zoom and 13Mp ultrawide lens which doubles as a macro camera for close-up shots.

It offers video capture at maximum of 4K UHD in 30fps or FHD resolution in either 60- or 30fps.

The handset is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset, which is paired with 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 512GB of UFS 2.2 onboard storage. It also has a 4500mAh battery and fast charging capabilities, including 125W wired and 50W wireless charging.

The Edge 50 Pro weighs 174.9g and measures 161.9 x 73.1 x 7.9mm. Available in Black Beauty and Luxe Lavender colours as standard, it also offers a limited edition Moonlight Pearl variant designed by company Mazzucchelli 1849.

Motorola Edge 50 Fusion

The Edge 50 Fusion is a more budget-friendly option that still offers premium design with its curved 6.7-inch Full HD+ pOLED display and 144Hz refresh rate. It’s also durable, thanks to the IP68 rating for water and dust resistance and Gorilla Glass 5 on the front.

However, it drops down to the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chipset paired with either 8- or 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128-, 256- or 512GB of UFS 2.2 internal storage.

On the rear, it also boasts a slightly stripped down camera setup of 50Mp main camera with OIS and 13Mp ultrawide lens, while on the front there’s a 32Mp selfie camera.

The phone offers video capture at UHD in 30fps or FHD in both 30- and 60fps.

The Edge 50 Fusion has a 5000mAh cell. Motorola says it offers over 30 hours of battery life, but doesn’t say anything about charging speeds.

Weightning 174.9g and measuring 161.9 x 73.1 x 7.9mm, the phone is available in Forest Blue, Hot Pink and Marshmallow Blue colours, all featuring a textured back, with the latter having a vegan leather finish.

Motorola Edge 50 Ultra

The most packed of the three, the Edge 50 Ultra features a thin sandblasted aluminium frame, Gorilla Glass Victus and IP68 rating for even better protection.

On the front, it boasts a 6.67-inch Super HD pOLED display with 144Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of 2500 nits. There’s also a 50Mp selfie camera with autofocus.

On the rear, the Ultra model has a 50Mp main camera, 50Mp ultrawide lens and 64Mp telephoto lens, all with OIS and autofocus features, along with a triple-LED flash.

The phone offers video capture at maximum of 4K UHD resolution and 60- or 30FPS.

The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 paired with 12- or 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB or 1TB of UFS 4.0 built-in storage. When it comes to charging, the Edge 50 Ultra has a 4500mAh battery with support of 125W wired charging and up to 50W wireless charging. It also features a 10W wireless power sharing.

The device will be available in three colours, including Peach Fuzz and Forest Grey (both being vegan leather) as well as Nordic Wood. It weights 197g and measures 161.09x 72.38 x 8.59mm, making it the heaviest of the three, despite having a slightly smaller screen and battery.

Software and Moto AI

All phones in the series are available out of the box with Android 14 and newly redesigned Hello UX, Motorola’s Android skin. However, its biggest upgrade is moto AI, that brings artificial intelligence to compete with the likes of Samsung and Google.

It offers extra customisation, intuitive gestures, Family Space for kids, and Moto Secure for comprehensive security settings. It also introduces Smart Connect feature for seamless integration across Lenovo and Motorola devices, offering a true multi-device experience. This includes support for external displays and easy data synchronisation.

It also introduces Photo Enhancement Engine to the Edge 50 Ultra, powered by AI, that helps in taking perfect photos by combining settings from multiple shooting modes.

It fine-tunes images for optimal detail, clarity, highlights, shadows, colour and bokeh. New features such as Adaptive Stabilisation can dynamically adjust stabilisation levels, while Auto Focus Tracking keeps subjects in focus. Action Shot optimises low-light photos and Long Exposure enables creative motion capture without the need for dedicated camera gear.

In terms of updates, Motorola promises to provide three years of Android version upgrades and four years of security updates for the Edge 50 series. That’s decent for the Fusion, but a little disappointing for the Pro and Ultra models.
