Chansiri must hire 2x promotion-winner if Rohl leaves Sheffield Wednesday, he's out of work - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday may be bracing themselves for a managerial change in the summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are no strangers to managerial appointments.

The Owls have had their fair share under the ownership of Dejphon Chansiri, with Danny Rohl the ninth different, permanent manager of the Chansiri era.

And Rohl may well be the best of the bunch.

Although Carlos Carvalhal achieved much more, Rohl has taken charge of what might be the worst Sheffield Wednesday team since Chansiri’s arrival, and completely changed their fortunes.

A former Championship promotion-winner in Xisco Munoz couldn’t get a single win in charge of this current team, though Rohl has almost 40 points on the board now.

Reports of Championship interest in Rohl surfaced earlier in the year.

But more recent it was revealed that Sunderland have shortlisted Rohl ahead of the summer, as the Black Cats eye up a new boss.

As per reports, Rohl is under contract at Sheffield Wednesday until the end of the 2024/25 season.

But recent form and a potential relegation to League One would surely push Rohl towards the exit door; even more so now that Sunderland have a firm interest.

Who could replace Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday

Chansiri then might have one eye on potential replacements for Rohl ahead of the summer.

And Chansiri may yet surprise everyone and pull off another Rohl-type appointment; Rohl was a relative unknown before he arrived having only been an assistant coach, but after seeing how well he’s done, Chansiri could be tempted to give another similar name their first job in management.

But relegation to League One might deter a lot of coaches, especially those like Rohl who’ve worked with some top clubs in the past.

One name springs to mind though; Alex Neil.

Why Alex Neil would be perfect solution for Dejphon Chansiri

Neil is currently out-of-work.

The 42-year-old Scot was axed by Stoke City earlier in the campaign following a tough year in charge, though it’s not an easy gig at the bet365 Stadium.

In fact, it’s something of a poisoned chalice with another top coach in Steven Schumacher now struggling to get results there as well.

Neil though should have his reputation very much in tact despite that showing at Stoke City.

And many might remember him more for what he did at Sunderland beforehand.

After four years in League One, Neil was finally the man to steer the Black Cats to promotion to the Championship, and then to a strong start to the following 2022/23 Championship season.

Neil was arguably the man who set them up for their eventual 6th place finish last season.

What’s more is that Neil was someone who really proved himself as an exciting manager.

Previous reports have proved how Neil was a manager who set his teams up to press high and work the opponent, so inheriting a Rohl side that’s been doing just that could make for a smoother transition for all.

Neil, who has won promotion from League One with Sunderland and from the Championship with Norwich City, might also be one of the few who’d be willing to drop down to the third tier with Wednesday, as he showed at the Stadium of Light.

And even if Wednesday stay up and Rohl still leaves, Neil would still be a solid bet, though the question of whether or not Neil would want to work under Chansiri remains.
