King Charles III seems to bury the hatchet 20 years after calling man 'awful'

King Charles has never been one to hold back his opinions on others, but he doesn’t bear grudges, especially when it comes to Nicholas Witchell – the ‘man he couldn’t stand’.

The monarch is said to have surprised the former BBC reporter Nicholas Witchell’s with a congratulatory video message at his retirement party, almost 20 years after his ‘snide comment,’ about the royal correspondent was awkwardly caught on the mic. For those of you who can’t quite remember King Charles‘ infamous comments, don’t worry we have a video down below…

King Charles ‘buries feud’ with Nicholas Witchell after 20 years

With almost 50 years of service behind him, NicholasWitchell retired from the BBC, and who better to wish him well than the man who ‘couldn’t stand him’ – King Charles.

It’s been reported the King, who is taking a step back from royal duties after being diagnosed with cancer, left a surprising ‘heartfelt’ message, joking about the ups and downs, between the two.

The famous ‘feud’ between the two started back in 2005 when Charles was on holiday in the Swiss Alps with his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. The trio were being interviewed by reporters, just before the now King’s wedding to Queen Consort Camilla, which took place in April that year.

Witchell was amongst the crowd of reporters, as he asked, the Prince how he was feeling about his upcoming big day, which birthed the famous moment.

“Bloody people. I can’t bear that man, I mean, he is so awful, he really is,” he could be heard whispering to his sons, which was clearly picked up by the mics.

Although the correspondent was ‘taken’ aback, he later said it was the ‘best thing that ever happened’ to him.

“There has never been an apology, and why should there be? He was probably quite right. You know, awful man,” he said in a 2014 interview with the Belfast Telegraph.

“You could take the view it was the best thing that happened to me, because it showed that it is our job as BBC journalists to report fairly and accurately, but not to seek approval. We’re not there to be liked.”

However, it’s said the pair ‘made up’ in 2019. Charles agreed to become patron of the Normandy Memorial Trust, a charity co-owned by the retried journalist.

Now, it looks like the relationship between the two is better than ever, as one attendee at the retirement party called the King’s message ‘generous and warm-hearted.’

“It did come as a surprise to everyone there, including Nicholas,” they told the Daily Mail. ” I think it would be fair to say the King’s message was generous and warm-hearted.”

The King’s relationship with his son has ‘vastly changed’ since the viral video

Upon watching the video taken in 2005, it may look strange to see Charles, Harry and William sat together smiling. It’d be rare to see that in the present day, as the brothers’ relationship is said to be ‘severely strained’.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s relationship with the rest of the family has been ‘strained’ ever since they up and left in 2020, however, they’re said to still keep in touch with the monarch.

“A striking difference between Charles and William when it comes to their relationships with Harry, there is still a warmth with Harry and Charles,” royal expert Omid Scobie told People. Unfortunately, it’s thought the same can’t be said for Harry and William.

It was reported the couple weren’t made aware of Kate Middleton‘s cancer diagnosis until shortly before it was broadcast on TV, so they weren’t at risk of ‘spilling the beans’.
