Former Blades boss could soon hand Sheffield Wednesday and Chansiri a much-needed boost - opinion

A former Sheffield United boss could come to the rescue for Sheffield Wednesday in the coming weeks.

Sheffield Wednesday have been in need of a hero this season, and they struck gold when they appointed Danny Rohl.

He’s become the club’s most well-liked manager since Carlos Carvalhal and despite their achievements differing greatly, many will even say that Rohl trumps his Portuguese predecessor.

Replacing Xisco Munoz earlier in the season, Rohl has galvanised a previously misfiring team and given them a huge chance of Championship survival.

Even now, after four games without a win and a tired performance in the 2-0 defeat vs Middlesbrough on Monday, the Owls just need a win to break out of the bottom three.

But Sheffield Wednesday’s good form under Rohl hasn’t gone unnoticed.

There were reports of Championship interest in Rohl a few weeks back.

Then more recently it was revealed that Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship rivals Sunderland are interested in Rohl ahead of the summer.

The Black Cats are set to appoint a new boss in the summer and it’s said that Rohl is one of the names on their shortlist.

And of course, Rohl leaving would come as a huge blow to Dejphon Chansiri and everyone involved with Sheffield Wednesday.

What’s more is that Rohl could take his Sheffield Wednesday backroom team to Sunderland, who are set to allow their next boss to bring in their own staff.

Latest on Danny Rohl future

Rohl responded to the Sunderland rumours last week, saying:

“Honestly, I said this some weeks before, that my focus is 100 per cent on the next eight games. What happens with the next game is the difficult one and all the rumours around me are not important. They are rumours, everybody can speak and write something. My focus is here at Sheffield Wednesday, my focus is on my team and my focus is to achieve our goals with this club.”

And after seeing how angry Rohl was after the Middlesbrough game, it could be safe to assume that Rohl would consider his options in the summer if Sheffield Wednesday are relegated.

Even if they stay up, few would blame Rohl if he took on a job with bigger ambitions and better resources.

But Chansiri could find an unlikely saviour in former Sheffield United boss, and indeed former Sheffield Wednesday player, Paul Heckingbottom.

Since Rohl has been linked with Sunderland, it’s also been revealed that Heckingbottom is top of Sunderland’s managerial wishlist.

Not only that, but the 46-year-old has been tipped to be interested in taking the job at the Stadium of Light this summer, should he be offered it.

And with Sunderland struggling in the league, there’s murmurs on social media that the Black Cats could bring in a new boss sooner rather than later.

That, then, could see Sunderland turn their attentions from Rohl and onto a boss, like Heckingbottom, who’s out-of-work right now.

And that would be a weight off the Owls’ shoulders as they go into this run-in.

But as ever, nothing is guaranteed, and the chances of Rohl potentially leaving Hillsborough in the summer remain evident.
