'Embarrassing' statistics highlight key Dejphon Chansiri fault at Sheffield Wednesday - opinion

Emerging Sheffield Wednesday statistics have once again brought to light a key issue at the club.

This season has been nothing but up and down for Sheffield Wednesday.

Even last month when the Owls won four games in a row, winning five in eight before the break, the mood was positive and everything and everyone was looking up.

But four games without a win, capped off by a bland and low-energy performance in the 2-0 defeat vs Middlesbrough, has that feel-good factor all but gone.

And whilst there’ll be frustrations over the players and maybe even over Danny Rohl, whose team selections and tactics in recent weeks have been criticised, it’s Dejphon Chansiri that should take the brunt of fans’ frustration.

Following the game vs Middlesbrough, journalist Dom Howson shared some stats on X which paint a very poor picture for the Owls this season.

Sheffield Wednesday are now the lowest scoring team in the Championship with 31 goals, which is one less than Rotherham United who look set to be relegated this weekend.

Also, Sheffield Wednesday have failed to score in 21 games this season and haven’t found the back of the net in three of their last four games.

Howson posted:

Dejphon Chansiri criticism at Sheffield Wednesday

Chansiri has seen his popularity at Sheffield Wednesday hit an all-time low this season.

It’s been a season is mishap after mishap and now, if the Owls are relegated and Rohl leaves amid interest from Sunderland, it looks like Sheffield Wednesday could quickly plummet down the Football League.

Rohl could yet take the backroom team to Sunderland, should he head there, and there’s also 18 players set to leave Hillsborough this summer, as things stand.

And that last part ties in to what Howson shared on X, which is that the recruitment at Sheffield Wednesday and the planning around players, is simply woeful.

It’s been an ongoing debate for coming up to a year now.

In League One, Sheffield Wednesday had David Downes as Head of Recruitment and analysis, and he helped oversee transfer windows good enough to get the Owls promoted.

He left upon promotion, shortly before Darren Moore, suggesting unrest behind the scenes.

Chansiri then plugged the gap with former COO Liam Dooley who’s since left for Shrewsbury Town, with Kevin Beadell arriving as the recruitment chief ahead of January.

And we saw some interesting links in January, but ultimately the club failed to do enough; Ian Poevda and Ike Ugbo have impressed, along with James Beadle, but Howson’s stats suggest that much more was needed.

Ultimately the buck stops with Chansiri.

Previous comments from Rohl suggest that Chansiri still has a huge say in footballing matters at Hillsborough, so even with Beadell at the club now, there’s still not enough structure.

There needs to be one more person between Chansiri and the footballing side of things and that could well be a COO, CEO, or a sporting director who can be that final bridge.

This season has seen Sheffield Wednesday really pay for Chansiri’s lack of proper planning and structure.
