New UK AirPods rival sounds hugely impressive - just don't look at the price

By Dave Snelling

Apple's AirPods remain some of the most popular earbuds in the business but they are getting yet another rival that sound incredibly impressive. US-based Campfire Audio has announced it's bringing its new Fathom earphones to UK users with these buds coming packed with top-notch audio technology and a radical design that features sharp edges and a black anodised finish.

Tucked inside the machined aluminium shell are six custom-made balanced armature drivers which have each been designed to enhance your listening experience.

Campfire says that this configuration includes dual custom high-definition super tweeters for crisp, clear highs; a pair of custom mid-range drivers for accurate vocal and instrument reproduction; and dual custom BA woofers for rich, balanced bass.

These new buds aim to offer a sound as true to the real recording as possible.

"The goal of Fathom’s design is to provide a sound true to the original recording, allowing you to hear your music with clarity and depth," the Portland-based company said. "By focusing on the accuracy and detail of each note, from the lowest bass to the highest treble, Campfire brings you closer to the music you love."

To make sure no quality is lost, the Fathom earphones get silver-plated copper cables to beam music into your ears. That's instead of wireless transmission which can be prone to interference. Some wire-free devices also require the audio signal to be compressed which can result in some loss of sound quality

Owners will also get a Dimensional Folding leather carrying case that holds the buds and cables and is hand-made in Portugal.

It all sounds mightily impressive but so it should when you see the price. Campfire Audio has confirmed that its Fathom earphones are available now priced at £1,049. Ouch!

For that price, you could buy four AirPods Pros and still have change left in the bank. The Fathom are clearly built for audiophiles who want the ultimate experience and have just had some luck on the Lotto.
