Report: Newcastle have now made contact over signing 27-year-old Jose Mourinho thought was 'dominant'

It’s going to be quite the summer for Newcastle United.

Whether or not the FFP limitations owners PIF are working under allow Newcastle to completely revamp their playing squad ahead of next season, it’s clear there need to be changes.

The defence, after all, has endured a nightmare campaign.

Not only are they leaking goals left, right and centre but injuries – as ever – are mounting again.

Indeed, both Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles will miss significant periods of action following serious knee injuries.

That leaves Eddie Howe light at the back and, as good as he’s been at times this season, Fabian Schar surely cannot go on forever.

With that in mind, players in that position are starting to be linked with a move to St James’ Park.

Though Newcastle could still make a late run for Europa League qualification, talk of potential summer transfers is starting to emerge.

While that’s only natural given the insatiable nature of the transfer window, one name has come somewhat out of left-field.

Newcastle have made contact over a move for Davinson Sanchez

That’s because, according to Turkish outlet Damga, Newcastle are one of the teams interested in Galatasaray defender Davinson Sanchez, formerly of Tottenham.

The Colombian international is said to have impressed those in the Turkish capital following his move from Spurs last summer and now has interest from some of Europe’s biggest leagues.

Napoli are said to be keen, while the report adds that Newcastle have made contact over the prospect of a move.

Currently, the 27-year-old is said to be valued at around €17m, which roughly equates to £14.5m.

Jose Mourinho has already delivered his verdict on Davinson Sanchez

Though perhaps not always the most convincing during his time with Spurs, Sanchez does have his merits.

Only three defenders in the Turkish league have won more in the way of aerial duels per game than the Colombian (2.8, via WhoScored). For context, Dan Burn’s average stands at 3.3 over the same period but the only other defender who matches Sanchez on that front is Lascelles at 2.9 and he will not be available for a while.

Jose Mourinho, who has been linked with a move to Newcastle, has also previously been impressed with Sanchez.

During his time with Spurs, he hailed the defender as “dominant” in March 2021.
