Critics pounce on journalist for hyping 'embarrassing' story on Trump's Spotify playlist

PALM BEACH, FLORIDA - MARCH 05: Republican presidential candidate, former President Donald Trump speaks at an election-night watch party at Mar-a-Lago on March 05, 2024 in Palm Beach, Florida. Sixteen states are holding primaries and caucuses today as part of Super Tuesday.

Axios reporter Jim VandeHei was on the receiving end of some significant criticism from his Twitter followers on Thursday for hyping up a story about former President Donald Trump's Spotify playlist.

In a post promoting the story, VandeHei posted two "siren" emojis, which are usually deployed to signify a major scoop, and he then proceeded to inform his followers that "there's a Rosetta stone that demystifies how his brain works, his closest friends tell us: his Mar-a-Lago Spotify playlist and nightly DJ routine."

Needless to say, VandeHei's scoop left many of his followers underwhelmed, as they argued it delivered little, if any, actual news value.

"I read this article and am still unsure what the point of it was," replied follower Alex Young.

"What the f--k is this lol," wrote The Bulwark's Joe Perticone.

Journalist Christopher Ingraham, meanwhile, said he would be "profoundly embarrassed to attach my name to this. With two sirens no less."

Several followers slammed VandeHei for seemingly trying to soft-pedal the authoritarian threat posed by a man who incited a deadly riot whose goal was to block the certification of the 2020 presidential election.

"This is some serious Hitler loved Götterdämmerung s--t from VandeHei," wrote progressive commentator Tom Watson, a lecturer at the Columbia University School of Professional Studies.

"This type of propaganda would be more suitable in North Korea," wrote another user.

Media Matters' Andrew Lawrence also chimed in to sarcastically nominate VandeHei's story for a Pulitzer Prize.
