Report: One club is now 'confident' of signing Bruno Guimaraes, Newcastle face real battle

Newcastle United could be set for some big changes this summer.

A big rebuild has been predicted at Newcastle after a difficult second full season under Eddie Howe’s stewardship.

While there are plenty of reasons for that, ranging from a ridiculous injury crisis and almost all of last summer’s signings not working out as hoped, it’s clear the club will need to strengthen if they are to challenge the top four again.

Whether or not the FFP restrictions PIF are operating under make that fully possible, however, remains to be seen.

Indeed, such is the limited spending the club have been able to do of late, a big sale has been touted.

Bruno Guimaraes has consistently been linked with a move away from St James’ Park due to an apparent £100m release clause in his contract.

In fact, previous reports have even suggested he is the player the club have opted to sell in order to raise the money required to fund their rebuild.

Still, while that does make financial sense, it would be difficult for anyone to put a positive spin on Guimaraes potentially leaving.

That being said, however, perhaps the less painful outcome would be to sell him to a European team rather than watching him move to a rival Premier League club.

Paris Saint-Germain are now confident of signing Bruno Guimaraes

Well, that may come to fruition.

According to The Sun, sources connected to Newcastle are aware that they face an uphill task in trying to keep Guimaraes this summer.

Sources within their report claim that French giants Paris Saint-Germain are “confident” they can lure the 26-year-old back to France, having previously played for rivals Lyon between 2020 and 2022.

PSG transfer is the best of a bad situation for Newcastle

It would be gutting to come up against Guimaraes in a Premier League setting. Watching him pull on the shirt of another English team and regularly returning to St James’ Park would be hard to watch.

If he is to leave, then PSG at least get rid of that problem.

Should Newcastle get £100m for him and not strengthen a domestic rival in the process, then at least some good could come from his potential departure.
