Man taken to hospital with facial injuries after fight breaks out in broad daylight on Newport High Street

A man was taken to hospital with facial injuries after a fight involving three people in broad daylight on Newport High Street.

There were rumours that someone had been stabbed and that police had found a knife following an incident involving hooded youths on bikes chasing a victim through the village.

Reports on social media said police and paramedics gathered outside Newport Pharmacy following the incident at lunchtime on Wednesday (April 3).

Said one Facebook user who witnessed the fight: “Myself and children saw a strange incident [at] 12.45 pm. A fight in the high street, at the crossing… two young men/teenagers, one with a mask, wearing all black –very strange experience, potentially another man as well running around with rucksacks, not sure what it was all about.”

An Essex Police spokesperson said: “We were called at about 12.45pm on Wednesday with reports a fight had taken place involving three people.”

But they said that as police were called after those involved in the violence had left the scene, officers did not attend the incident. The spokesperson also dismissed reports of a knife or other weapon being used.

A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We were called just before 1pm on Wednesday with reports that a man had sustained facial injuries at an address on Newport High Street.

“An ambulance and a rapid response vehicle were sent to the scene. The man was transported to Addenbrooke’s Hospital [in Cambridge] for further treatment.”
