Aston Villa could have PSR concerns eased after 'radical' Premier League twist today - opinion

Aston Villa’s PSR concerns could have been eased today after a “radical” report emerged from the Daily Mail.

After instances at Everton and Nottingham Forest this season, conversations have emerged over Villa’s ability to stay within the Premier League’s regulation, particularly when analysing the club’s losses.

Villa announced losses of nearly £120million during the 2023 trading period, which is believed to be the highest in Europe.

The hierarchy in the West Midlands are adamant that they’re working within the financial parameters. The board will likely be pushing the limits even if this is believed.

The Athletic even revealed in January that, with the Jack Grealish instalments ending, the club could be forced into selling one of its star players with Douglas Luiz mentioned. However, after recent news, that eventuality might not play out.

Thursday PSR twist could help Aston Villa

According to the Daily Mail, Premier League clubs are considering scrapping PSR and replacing it with “luxury tax”.

It’s believed instances at Everton and Nottingham Forest – coupled with a quiet January window have raised concerns among officials.

It’s believed there are fears the Premier League will become less lucrative, with the league unable to afford the best players at the best wages.

The report suggests this “radical” reform could be voted in at the end of the season meeting in June, which could come just in time for Villa.

How can Aston Villa benefit from this?

If this new system is voted through, Villa’s current PSR concerns could be eased, and player sales could be prevented.

The ‘luxury tax’ concept would see clubs face financial punishment which would increase the more they splash the cash.

And this could work in Villa’s favour.

We’ve seen that, under the current ownership, the club are more than happy to show ambition and thrash out fairly eye-catching transfer fees.

If Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens are happy to face a financial punishment, the club’s current trajectory can stay the course.
