Why people over the age of 40 start to smell 'greasy', as it has nothing to do with hygiene

If you have ever got a “musty, grassy, and greasy” smell from older people, that’s caused by a natural process.

Just because people over the age of 40 have a different scent doesn’t mean they are unhygienic, although there are ways to reduce the odor.

Why people over 40 smell ‘greasy’

The odor that comes from people older than 40 is called “2-noneal” and it’s the result of a chemical breakdown that occurs in the body.

Starting at the age of 40, the unsaturated fatty omega acids that sit on the skin degrade changes.

Dermatologist Dr. Scott Walter explained that the fatty acids when exposed to oxygen are degraded to 2- noneal.

To put it in layman’s terms, the natural antioxidant properties of the skin that protect it from chemical reactions are reduced with aging.

When the lip acid reacts with oxygen, it creates a compound called 2-noneal, also known as the “old person smell.”

As opposed to the popular belief, the old person smell has nothing to do with hygiene and is a natural process that takes place with aging.

Doctor’s tip to reduce the odor

The distinct smell often lingers on clothes and sticks to the body as it’s an ongoing chemical reaction. However, the smell can be reduced with frequent showers and regular washing of clothes and bedding.

Just like the elders, people of all age groups tend to have unique odors.

Healthline reports, that the smell of an infant may be more appealing to mothers, thus strengthening the bond between them.

Similarly, the smell unique to adults may be a signal of fertility and health to find a mate.
