'Bizarre': Steve Bruce says £62m Man City player is so good it's crazy

Steve Bruce has been left baffled by how good one Manchester City player is.

After winning the Treble las season, the Citizens are on the hunt to do the same thing again this time around.

With the Blues also having the chance to make history by winning a fourth Premier League title in a row, they took a step towards this target last night by beating Aston Villa 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

During this game, one player in the City side caught the attention of one former top-flight manager who couldn’t help but share his admiration for the figure in question.

Speaking on BBC 5 Live Sport during their coverage of City’s win over Villa, Bruce had this to say about Rodri.

He said: “Is there a better player in the Premier League than Rodri? I’m not sure there is.

“He is a big strong lad, makes everything look so easy, scores goals. The statistics he has, having not lost a game of football in a year, that is bizarre! Incredible talent.”

The midfielder, who City paid £62m to sign from Atletico Madrid back in 2019, opened the scoring in Wednesday’s win over the Villans and is currently unbeaten in his last 63 games across all competitions.

With 27 Premier League appearances under his belt this season, the 27-year-old has shown how much of a key figure he is for the team, on and off the ball.

For example, in an attacking sense, the Spaniard has made more passes into the final third of the pitch (300) than any other City player, as well as making more shot-creating actions (132) and goal-creating actions (19) than any of his teammates.

Then from a defensive point of view, Rodri tops the list for the number of recoveries (188) he’s made, in addition to having the highest combined total of tackles and interceptions (77) in the squad.

His overall performances have earned the midfielder a solid season rating of 7.62/10 from WhoScored, making him the second-highest-rated player in the Premier League behind Bukayo Saka (7.64/10).

Taking all of this into account, it’s easy to see why the former Newcastle United manager has been blown away by the City star.
