Frank Lampard shares how he actually felt when he scored against Chelsea for Manchester City

Frank Lampard has shared what he felt after scoring a goal for Manchester City against Chelsea.

After bringing an end to a 13-year spell at the west London club in 2014, the midfielder then joined New York City before shortly returning to England to spend the 2014/15 season on loan with the Citizens.

During that season, Lampard made 38 appearances across all competitions for City, scoring eight goals and delivering four assists along the way.

One of those goals, his first to be precise, caught a lot of attention as it came against Chelsea in a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

With over nine years having gone by since this moment, the former England international has opened up about what he felt after scoring against a club he spent the majority of his career at.

Speaking in a recent video shared on the Pro:Direct Soccer YouTube channel, Lampard had this to say about his famous goal for City against Chelsea.

He said: “One of the most surreal moments of my career.

“It’s not pure negative because I think when you become a professional you have to do your job. I’d left Chelsea, that time had come for Chelsea to move on and for me to move on in my career and I was very proud to play for Manchester City.

“I did my job and I would never disrespect Chelsea, particularly the fan base who had always taken to me so well, I was never going to celebrate a goal and get overly excited for it but in terms of doing my job, I think we drew that game anyway, Chelsea did win the league that season and for me, my job is to try and score goals from midfield so it was one of those moments.”

Bearing in mind how Lampard made 648 appearances for Chelsea in his playing career, it’s understandable why he wanted to respect the club and their fans after scoring against them for one of their Premier League rivals.

However, it is nice to hear how proud he was to play for City, even though it was just for a short spell.
