Two members of Congress with close ties to former President Donald Trump have received subpoenas from Arizona investigators with questions about efforts to overturn the state's 2020 election, according to a new report.

Reps. Andy Biggs and Paul Gosar have been ordered to testify in front of a grand jury as Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, leads a probe into the historic events that followed the November 2020 election, Politico reported Thursday.

"Mayes appears to be nearing a decision on whether to ask the grand jury to issue indictments in the case," write Betsy Woodruff Swan and Kyle Cheney.

Politico did not receive comment from Gosa or Biggs.

Both men vocally supported Trump’s efforts to overturn Biden’s Arizona victory and attended a White House strategy meeting with Trump ahead of the riots on Jan. 6, 2021, Politico reports.

The report also notes that Mayes' decision is not one commonly made.

"Subpoenas to members of Congress in criminal investigations are rare," Woodruff Swan and Cheney write, "in part because lawmakers enjoy robust constitutional protections from criminal proceedings connected to their official business."

The subpoenas were sent out as Mayes mulls potential criminal charges linked to efforts to overturn President Joe Biden's victory in the key swing state.

Last month, Woodruff Swan and Cheney reported it remains unclear the full extent of those charges, or if they will ever be filed.

News broke in August that Mayes' office would investigate the Trump campaign's post-election actions in Arizona, one of seven lost states Trump tried to reclaim with slates of electors purportedly told to submit the ex-president's name.

Similar efforts in Georgia spurred Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to charge Trump and more than a dozen others with election racketeering.
