Manchester United player ratings vs Chelsea, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho shine but there's one 3/10

Manchester United have somehow lost 4-3 to Chelsea in a massively entertaining game on Thursday night.

Things looked bleak when Conor Gallagher gave the home side the lead after just four minutes and they got even worse when Cole Palmer doubled the advantage from the penalty spot.

But Manchester United fought back in an end-to-end first half, levelling through goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes.

The frantic, relentless attacking play continued in the second half with both teams throwing everything forward but it was Erik ten Hag’s side who got the third as Garnacho nodded in a stunning cross from Antony.

United looked like they had the win but once again couldn’t hold on deep into added time as Palmer equalised with another penalty and then won it with a dramatic, last-gasp winner to complete the hat-trick.

Here’s how the players rated in a thrilling match.

Andre Onana – 6

Weak hands for Gallagher’s goal but redeemed himself with an excellent throw out to Fernandes to kick-off the move that led to the equaliser.

Alert to all danger after his early mishap and made several fine stops. Could do nothing about the third and fourth.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 5

Back at right-back but struggled at times with Mykhailo Mudryk staying high up the pitch, often leaving him caught between pushing up or staying with his man.

Lost Axel Disasi on a free-kick but got away with it. Otherwise strong in the challenge as always.

Harry Maguire – 5

Lucky not to be punished by Chelsea when he went to ground and didn’t win the ball off Nicolas Jackson, who then couldn’t find a teammate. Was solid and defended well the rest of the time.

Went close to what would have been a sensational goal just after the break, poor positioning for the winner.

Raphael Varane – 5

The second game in a row he had to go off with an injury and it’s baffling why he even started, let alone stayed on for as long as he did in obvious discomfort.

Diogo Dalot – 4

Surprisingly at left-back and didn’t look as comfortable. Lost the ball and was poorly positioned for the opener before giving away a penalty in the 97th minute.

Struggled with the skill and movement of Cole Palmer all night. Did get an assist with a fantastic cross for Fernandes’ goal.

Casemiro – 3

A terrible display that really epitomises his decline.

A couple of nice passes aside, he was repeatedly caught on the ball, weak in the tackle, didn’t close down Gallagher for the opener and at one point just allowed Jackson to saunter past him without any pressure at all.

Additionally, rather than being too high up the pitch like Scott McTominay, Casemiro left Kobbie Mainoo haplessly vulnerable in midfield by sitting far too deep.

He was often in the back lin, leaving yet another massive hole to be exploited in the middle. Finally taken off in the 74th minute.

Kobbie Mainoo – 6

There was one poor pass to initially give the ball away for the opener but was otherwise his confident self on the ball, with some silky passing play.

Though left exposed in transition, Casemiro sitting did give him more freedom to drive forward. Dug in deep with some good blocks and challenges late on.

Antony – 8

Perhaps his best performance in a United shirt… ever? At least since his opening fortnight in Manchester.

Even the poor tracking back and foolish tackle to give away the penalty didn’t detract from the display.

Antony was lively from the start and always looking to make things happen, which he did by being key to all three goals.

He did really well to keep the ball in play for Garnacho’s goal and was central to the leveller, too, with a lovely switch of play.

The Brazilian saved the best until last by playing a stunning outside-of-the-boot pass, one of the best of the season according to Ally McCoist, to set up Garnacho’s second goal.

Bruno Fernandes – 7

Excellent distribution as he helped United play nice football through the Chelsea press and scored a well-placed header for the leveller in a move he kicked off with an intelligent run from his own box.

Didn’t stop running all night.

Alejandro Garnacho – 7

Wasteful in possession for the first half an hour as he continued to run down blind allies rather than release the ball.

But when an opportunity was presented by Moises Caicedo’s wayward pass he pounced and kept his composure to score. Was brave to nod in the third and also involved in the leveller.

Garnacho was decisive where it mattered but his general play can get even better.

Rasmus Hojlund – 4

Did well to leave the ball for Fernandes’ goal and looked dangerous on two occasions when given space to exploit but couldn’t turn them into solid shots on goal.

Didn’t anticipate a great ball from Antony after the winger had done well to create the chance. Hooked in the 65th minute.

Substitutes

Jonny Evans – 6

Another dependable display when called upon at the half-time break. He made three blocks within 10 minutes, including a vital one from Enzo Fernandez’s shot, and cleared everything that came his way.

Sadly, he lasted just 20 minutes before going off himself.

Marcus Rashford – 5

Brought on for the ineffective Hojlund but didn’t get many chances to attack.

Willy Kambwala – 5

On for just his seventh senior appearance and played things safe by clearing danger with conviction but panicked in the final moments as Chelsea found a winner.

Scott McTominay – 4

Didn’t do much after coming on other than deflect the winner into the goal past Onana.

Mason Mount – 5

Came on to a reception of boos at Stamford Bridge with a few minutes remaining and had some nice touches.
