Chaplin movie streaming on Prime Video

Recently gracing the extensive Amazon Prime Video library is the 1992 biographical comedy-drama Chaplin.

The movie was directed by Richard Attenborough and stars Robert Downey Jr as the titular Charlie Chaplin, one of the most iconic and important historical figures in all of cinema.

Both an actor and filmmaker, the English talent remains one of the best-known screen stars of the silent era, taking on the persona of the Tramp which audiences everywhere are sure to recognize by the mustache and bowler hat. Movies like City Lights, The Great Dictator, and The Kid are certified classics of the bygone era, but my favorite is the hilarious Modern Times from 1936.

Robert helps bring the man’s ambitious story to life, adapting non-fiction books to chronicle the pivotal and monumental moments of a storied career, also focusing a lens on his personal experiences beyond the films.

For an actor to portray one of the most celebrated to ever take up the profession must be an honor, although tackling the role both succeeded and failed to land RDJ some of the highest honors a performer can hope for…

Robert Downey Jr missed out on Chaplin Oscar

Chaplin is a great movie and its quality was recognized by the Academy when RDJ was nominated for Best Actor at the 65th ceremony.

He was competing in the coveted Oscars category against Denzel Washington for Malcolm X, Stephen Rea for The Crying Game, Clint Eastwood for Unforgiven, and Al Pacino for Scent Of A Woman, with Al ultimately taking home the prestigious award.

All the same, it was a major achievement just to be nominated, serving as the actor’s first Oscars nomination.

His second came for a role in the 2008 Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder, which saw him competing against but losing to Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. Sadly, the statue was collected by his family in the wake of the Joker actor’s tragic passing.

Fast forward to earlier this year and RDJ finally bagged an Oscar for his Best Supporting Actor role in the Christopher Nolan blockbuster biopic Oppenheimer. That’s three tremendous films he was nominated for, but Chaplin is likely the one you haven’t seen and should seek out.

Chaplin is now streaming on Netflix.
