Problem with Danish navy missile launcher resolved, traffic reopened

Air and sea traffic in the area around the Korsør naval base in Denmark has been reopened following a malfunctioning weapons system on a Royal Danish Navy ship, the Danish Ministry of Defence said on Friday.

The missile launcher on board the frigate Niels Juel was activated and unable to be switched off, which led to officials shutting down air and sea traffic near the base.

But specialists checked whether it was an activation of the launcher or an electronic error message and there is no longer any danger of the frigate firing a projectile, the ministry said.

Due to the incident, there was a risk over several hours that the missile might fire. Crews of ships travelling towards the danger zone were warned and asked to wait until the problem had been resolved.

The danger zone was between 5 and 7 kilometres from the naval base. Marine traffic has been told to stay away from the area and the airspace above has been closed off.
