‘Always a handful’: Virgil van Dijk says he used to hate playing against someone Man City let go in 2021

Virgil van Dijk has named one former Manchester City player as one of the toughest opponents he’s ever faced.

The Liverpool defender has faced off against a plethora of players during his time in the Premier League with the Reds and his previous club Southampton.

Now though, the Dutchman has revealed who some of the hardest players he’s ever had to come up against are, with one former City star getting a special mention.

Speaking in a recent edition of The Rest Is Football, Van Dijk had this to say about Sergio Aguero when asked to name some of the toughest players he’s faced in his career.

He said: “He didn’t score many goals against us if I’m honest but since I played against him when I was at Southampton he was always a handful.

“He could finish left and right, you always had to be at your best. One goal I remember he scored against us in 18/19, he came in front of Dejan Lovren from a cross and he just finished it quickly. So yeah, he’s definitely up there.”

During his 10-year spell at the Manchester club, Aguero made 390 appearances for City across all competitions, scoring 260 goals and winning numerous trophies along the way.

In terms of his games against Van Dijk, the Argentine played against the centre-back on seven occasions, three times when he was at Southampton and four for Liverpool, winning three, drawing three and losing two.

Even though Aguero only scored one goal across those seven games, the one that Van Dijk mentioned against Liverpool in the 2018/19 season, the fact that he scored so many goals during his very successful time in England makes it easy to see why the defender found it tough to handle the former striker.
