Sporting's Amorim leaves future open amid alleged Liverpool interest

Sporting coach Ruben Amorim has left his future at the Lisbon club open amid speculation that he is a candidate to succeed Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool in summer.

Amorim, 39, told reporters on Friday that unlike another potential Liverpool candidate, Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso, he could not guarantee staying on for the next season.

"I will leave Sporting if we don't win any titles," he said. "So, first we want to win titles and then we will see. We are on a good path."

Sporting are Portuguese league leaders one point ahead of crosstown rivals and title holders Benfica, and have a game in hand. They have also reached the domestic Cup final.

Amorim has been at Sporting since 2020 and led them to a first league title in 21 years in his first season.

Alonso said last week they he will be staying in Leverkusen who are unbeaten in their 40 season games, 13 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, in the German Cup final and the Europa League quarter-finals, ending potential Liverpool and Bayern Munich interest.

Liverpool are looking for a new coach because Klopp will step down at the end of the season after almost nine years at the club.
