The crash happened between the Wrotham Road junction in Gravesend junction and the Ebbsfleet junction in Swanscombe at about 8.15pm.

Shortly before 9pm the road was shut entirely leading to massive queues between Pepperhill junction and Spring Head Interchange.

Cars are queuing back to Bluewater and Gravesend in either direction respectively.

National Highways has warned drivers the road will be shut “for a protracted period” with estimates placing closures in place until at least 11pm.

Police, paramedics, the fire service and the air ambulance are all at the scene alongside National Highways teams.

It is not yet known how many vehicles have been involved or whether anyone is seriously injured.
