Another N.J. school district will dismiss kids early to avoid the eclipse

Winslow Township schools will close early on Monday due to safety concerns about the solar eclipse, school officials told families Friday afternoon.

A notice on the Camden County district’s website and distributed through social media said schools will be dismissed early “to ensure that all students are home safely” and to make sure buses will be off the road before the darkest part of the eclipse.

Winslow is the latest in a growing number of school district announcing early dismissals and half days due to the eclipse.

School officials are concerned that students may look at the eclipse without protective glasses or other devices, causing eye damage.

In Winslow, schools 1, 2, 3 and 4 will close at 1:15 p.m., schools 5 and 7 will close at 12:45 p.m., the middle school will close at noon, and the high school will close at 11:19 a.m.

Livingston schools were the first in the state to announce an early dismissal for the eclipse and other districts followed, including Shore Regional, Pennsauken, Cherry Hill and Burlington Township.

The fifth grade in Harding Township persuaded their school board to close early, as well.
