'Absolutely': Erik ten Hag has no doubt 'resilient' Man United star will bounce back from Chelsea blunder

Erik ten Hag has no doubt one of his most important players will bounce back after his costly mistake against Chelsea.

Manchester United return to action on Sunday afternoon as they take on fierce rivals Liverpool in the Premier League.

There’s even more motivation for United as a victory could be catastrophic to Jurgen Klopp’s side’s title push.

However, it’s going to be difficult to repeat the heroics of the recent FA Cup tie as United were unable to use the dramatic win as a catalyst for a turnaround.

In the two matches since United have twice gone deep into injury time ahead but were unable to walk away with the three points.

They didn’t even deserve a draw against Brentford but played well in the thriller with Chelsea, fighting from two goals down to go ahead.

An Alejandro Garnacho brace and Bruno Fernandes header put United 3-2 up but Cole Palmer scored twice in two last-gasp minutes to give Chelsea the lead.

One player made a costly error in the defeat

Chelsea’s late leveller came from the penalty spot after Diogo Dalot tripped Noni Madueke in the box.

The full-back had allowed Madueke to get the wrong side of him and brought him down as he advanced on goal.

It was a foolish mistake from Dalot but Erik ten Hag believes he will be able to recover from the setback without issue.

When asked if the Portuguese would be able to bounce back, Ten Hag told United’s in-house media: “Absolutely.

“Diogo is a very resilient character. He will deal with it. I’m sure.

“But counts for Diogo and for the whole team.

“He was playing a brilliant game but you always get judged by moments and there he makes a mistake.

“He will deal with it. I’m not reserved, I’m sure he will be there on Sunday. “

Ten Hag must make Dalot change

Despite Ten Hag’s praise, Dalot did not have his best game against Chelsea even if he did set up Fernandes’ goal with a fantastic cross.

The 25-year-old was given a torrid time by Palmer, who repeatedly glided past him thanks to his quick feet and intelligent movement.

It didn’t help that Dalot had been moved to left-back for the match from his usual position on the right.

Ten Hag opted to swap the full-backs around even though Aaron Wan-Bissaka has impressed on his unnatural side since returning from injury.

It was a strange decision that proved costly and it should be reverted against Liverpool.
