The top-seeded UConn Huskies have been on a march to near perfection this NCAA Tournament. They’ve looked like one of the more dominant teams in college basketball history in their past few games. And they’re in the middle of trying to earn their place in history ahead of Saturday night’s Final Four matchup with the No. 4 seed, Alabama Crimson Tide. A couple hours ahead of the games on Saturday, Clark Kellogg took some time to speak with UConn head coach Dan Hurley about what’s changed from last year’s national championship team.
Where has Hurley gotten better or changed as a coach from last season to this year?
“Clark, I think obviously we made a lot of strides offensively last year. You know, with the way we approach things. And we became really hard to guard. I think you know, we worked a lot more in the offseason on becoming more diverse offensively. Obviously, it was a different team. Losing [Adama] Sanogo and [Jordan] Hawkins and Andre Jackson. We just didn’t stick to the same system. We retooled things to play to our new strengths,” Hurley explained.
Dan Hurley has also had a notorious temper on the sidelines over the years as the head coach for UConn. The Huskies’ return to glory on the hardwood has helped to change that. With their remarkable levels of dominance they’ve demonstrated on the floor, it’s helped to put the mercurial head coach at ease.
“And I’ve also, you know, I think I’ve gotten a little calmer on the sideline. (Laughs). I don’t know if you’ve noticed. I’ve got that championship confidence now. Obviously, that makes a big difference. When you’ve accomplished the ultimate, you’ve got a lot more confidence in what you’re doing,” Hurley said.
