Report: Fulham showing interest in signing £20m Championship sensation this summer

Fulham were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon and what looked like being a promising end to the season now looks petering out a little.

Fulham fans were probably getting a little bit excited after wins over Manchester United, Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur.

The international break seems to have broken Fulham’s momentum, especially as it came straight after that superb 3-0 win over Spurs.

Fulham have returned from the international break with just one point from a possible nine.

The 3-3 draw at Sheffield United was dramatic but hardly vintage Fulham whilst the 3-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest saw Fulham put away inside the first half.

Fulham needed a response against Newcastle United and whilst the performance was improved, Marco Silva still tasted a 1-0 defeat.

There are six Premier League games to go now but Fulham’s hopes of a top-half finish have taken a real hit and fans may already have one eye on the summer transfer window.

Fulham want Championship sensation

Silva has already indicated that Fulham’s transfer plans are in place for the summer and one new name has emerged as a target.

The Sunday Mirror (07/04, p70) report that Fulham are interested in snapping up Plymouth Argyle winger Morgan Whittaker.

It’s suggested that Fulham have joined West London rivals Brentford in ‘keeping tabs’ on Whittaker ahead of a potential summer move.

Argyle spent around £1million to sign Whittaker last summer having impressed on loan at Home Park in the first half of last term.

Whittaker has dazzled in the Championship, racking up 19 goals and eight assists in a struggling Argyle side.

It’s noted that Whittaker is valued at around £20million right now, but that fee could come down in Argyle are relegated.

The Pilgrims are just two points clear of the Championship relegation zone and Fulham will be watching their fate very closely.

Who is Fulham target Morgan Whittaker?

Whittaker hails from Derby and started his career in the Derby County youth ranks, making 32 first-team appearances for the club.

Swansea City pounced in 2021 but the move to South Wales didn’t really work out for him.

Whittaker only managed 37 appearances for the Swans, bagging six goals.

A loan spell to Lincoln City in 2022 saw Whittaker hit five goals in 20 games before then heading to Plymouth Argyle, where he scored nine times in 31 games.

Swansea recalled Whittaker but barely used him before cashing in last summer, paving the way for his permanent move to Devon.

Now destroying Championship defences, Whittaker looks destined for the Premier League but do Fulham need him?

Whittaker is a right-sided winger who loves to cut in on his left foot, just like Harry Wilson.

Adama Traore also wants to play down the right flank and somebody may need to switch to the right side – especially if Willian moves on.

Playing Whittaker down the left side would be something of a waste but Silva may want to move somebody else over to pave the way for this £20million addition.
