Manchester United player ratings v Liverpool, Willy Kambwala and Andre Onana shine, two players get 4/10 - opinion

Manchester United and Liverpool faced off once again at Old Trafford in the Premier League, here are our player ratings.

The 90 minutes at Old Trafford are up and finally after that second half, we can breathe.

The first half, saw Liverpool dominate and probably should’ve held a lead triple the 1-0 they headed into the break with.

The second half was a lot more open and chaotic with no real structure to the game just end-to-end play.

It’s the type of football that suits Erik ten Hag‘s side and a Bruno Fernandes goal levelled things up.

Kobbie Mainoo then rewrote the script with a beautiful goal to put Manchester United 2-1 ahead.

Liverpool were then handed a silly penalty which was converted by Mohammed Salah to make it 2-2.

This is how it ended, as it was yet another exciting United game to watch. Here are the player ratings for the game…

Andre Onana – 8

Andre Onana continued his great form, keeping Liverpool out early with a great save which even drew some praise from Jamie Carragher.

The Liverpool legend admitted while on commentary: “Fair play to the goalkeeper, he’s been in good form over the last few months.”.

Again it’s difficult to judge him on conceding given how many chances we handed Liverpool on a plate, but without him, it would’ve been over in the first half.

Diogo Dalot – 6

Diogo Dalot was back to form against Liverpool and kept the left side quiet for much of the game.

He quietly went about his business while also helping out Kambwala in the middle on a few occasions.

Willy Kambwala – 8

There were concerns over how Willy Kambwala would cope in this game with the stakes so high, but he didn’t look out of place.

A few big tackles early on will have given him confidence but the bit that impressed us most was that he was moving up the field with the midfield to limit the huge gap – at times.

His recovery pace in defence along with his strength was a blessing as he got the better of Darwin Nunez on multiple occasions.

Very solid display for Kambwala, he’s shown today why Ten Hag has so much faith in him, he should start every game until the end of the season.

Harry Maguire – 7

Harry Maguire, like Kambwala, can be proud of his outing, as he was faced with doing far more defensive work than he should be asked to do.

The No. 5 played a huge part in keeping Liverpool from running away in the first half, a very solid display.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 4

Up against Mohammed Salah, Aaron Wan-Bissaka could barely get near him, with the Egyptian doing whatever he wanted on the right.

He was also very sloppy on the ball and made a howler of a challenge to gift Liverpool a penalty.

Poor and was lucky to not see Salah capitalise on the space he gave him.

Casemiro – 5

It’s no surprise to write this anymore, but Casemiro was pretty poor once again. His sloppiness in possession along with just booting the ball up the field instead of keeping the ball.

He was also once again slow getting back which left the defence exposed at times.

But he still managed to make a few vital tackles, which came in handy toward the end of the game.

Kobbie Mainoo – 7

Mainoo had an uncharacteristically quiet start to the game, but for Liverpool’s opener, he was culpable for losing Luis Diaz from the set-piece.

However post this, he got a foothold in the game, winning a few tackles and some good passes. In the second half, he looked a lot better.

He stole the headlines, casually scoring another goal-of-the-season contender to add to his goal vs Wolves, curling one in from the edge of the box. Incredible.

Alejandro Garnacho – 5

After a brace against Chelsea, Alejandro Garnacho started well before Liverpool took hold of the game.

He didn’t get the chance to impact the game, so five is a fair rating with his work rate decent along with some flashes of his quality.

Bruno Fernandes – 6

Bruno was having a horrid game but in the 50th minute, he turned the game on its head with his 50th Premier League goal for the club.

With Liverpool sloppy in possession at the back he chipped the keeper from distance to hand United a massive momentum boost.

Some questionable decision-making making however keeps him at a six.

Marcus Rashford – 5

Marcus Rashford looked up for this game and his pressing will have silenced a lot of his critics. His pressing played a part in forcing the mistake which led to Bruno’s goal.

But other than that, he didn’t contribute much – like Garnacho – departing the field in the 65th minute through a potential injury.

Rasmus Hojlund – 4

In the first half, Rasmus Hojlund might as well have taken a seat as he wasn’t in the game at all, this continued for the entire game.

Must be infuriating for the striker to go through repeatedly, but when he did get the ball, he didn’t make the most of it.

Antony – 5

Antony came off the bench for Rashford just before Mainoo scored and didn’t get the chance to impress too much on the ball, but his defensive work rate is always appreciated.

Sofyan Amrabat – 5

Solid when he came on, and added some structure to the midfield.

Mason Mount – 5

Coming on late as he did while United held on, there wasn’t much scope to impress on the ball, but didn’t put a foot wrong.

Tracked back well and made a few solid actions to prevent Liverpool as Wan-Bissaka struggled.
