‘It’s mad’: Gary Neville left stunned after what Manchester United were doing vs Liverpool today

Gary Neville was unimpressed with one area of Manchester United’s game against Liverpool on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag’s men enjoyed a bright start to today’s clash at Old Trafford, with Alejandro Garnacho having a goal ruled out for offside in the early stages.

But Liverpool began to dominate thereafter and Luis Diaz opened the scoring midway through the first half.

Jurgen Klopp’s men eventually rued their wasted chances as Bruno Fernandes produced a spectacular effort to catch Caoimhin Kelleher off his line.

Yet, Gary Neville wasn’t particularly impressed with Man United’s display and labelled their defensive set-up as ‘mad’ during the early stages of the second half.

Neville stunned at United’s defending

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville was co-commentating on the game and took issue with United’s defensive set-up from throw-ins.

The former United man claimed that Ten Hag’s men were failing to get the basics right.

“I just can’t believe United’s defensive set-up from a simple throw-in,” he said. “I’ll say it again, it’s mad!”

While it was a disjointed display from United for the first hour of the game, they punished Liverpool early in the second half.

After Fernandes’ stunner, Kobbie Mainoo then stepped up to produce an exceptional finish of his own.

United pick up unlikely point at Old Trafford

Despite struggling for large periods of the game, Ten Hag will be content with a point today. His United side rode their luck at times as Liverpool proved to be wasteful in the final third.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka gave away a penalty after a late challenge on Harvey Elliott, which ultimately led to Klopp’s side picking up a point.

Mohamed Salah sent Andre Onana the wrong way from 12 yards out and on the balance of play, it was the least Liverpool deserved.

Nevertheless, United deserve some credit for staying in the game and they provided a threat of their own on the counter in the second period.
