Michigan head coach Dusty May continues to put in the work on the recruiting trail and more. There are rumblings on a potential new assistant coach hire, yet another player he’s reached out to in the portal, and movement with Notre Dame transfer Carey Booth.

First off, we can move Booth to the ‘very high’ mutual interest category after On3’s Jamie Shaw caught up with him yesterday for an update.

Booth finished his freshman year at Notre Dame starting 19 games and averaging 6.4 points and 4.3 rebounds on the season, including 8.0 points and 4.8 rebounds on 38.5 percent shooting from 3-point range in March.

“I like to play fast,” Booth told On3 … “get the rebound and push the break. My shooting ability opens up everything else for my game. This season, my IQ grew a lot especially on the defensive end, being in the right spots.”

Michigan, Ohio State, Illinois, Texas, and Colorado State are the five he mentioned to Shaw. He plans on setting up visits after the dead period ends (next week) and wants to commit “sooner than later,” though he doesn’t have a timetable.

“I want to go to a play for a coach that believes in me. That is the most important thing,” he said. “And play in a program that lets me play my game. They play faster, run, and get up the floor. When the team is rebounding and flying around, everything opens up.”

He believes May wants to do just that.

“They are going to play at a fast pace. Coach (Dusty) May had a great run at FAU,” he said. “They have not had any players like me at FAU, but they were in a lower conference so they are going to get more guards. He plays with a lot of space, and they want me to play inside/out.”

Another to watch: Selton Miguel of South Florida. He’s declared for the 2024 NBA Draft but will also portal, and Michigan has reached out.

Miguel played for two seasons at Kansas State prior to SFU. He started 36 games through his two seasons and averaged 7.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.9 steals in 26.2 minutes per game. He averaged 14.7 points and 3.2 rebounds with the Bulls.

Miguel has a long list that includes Louisville, Texas, Ohio State, and others in addition to Michigan.

Finally, May is still working on his staff. In addition to Georgia assistant Akeem Miskdeen and possibly Oklahoma State’s Mike Boynton, another name has surfaced as a possibility — Tennessee’s Rod Clark. There’s been no confirmation at this point, but a lot of smoke.

Clark is known as an aggressive recruiter and an up and coming assistant, having coached at the AAU and Prep ranks with MOKAN and Sunrise Christian Academy. Tennessee hired him in 2021.
