Manchester United's 3 best players in thrilling 2-2 draw with Liverpool - opinion

On Sunday, Manchester United laid a heavy blow onto Liverpool’s title hopes with a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.

Manchester United had several standout performers in the game against Liverpool.

It was a game which saw all the same structure problems we’re accustomed to, but like we saw three weeks ago, Liverpool just for some reason struggled to take their chances.

Much to Erik ten Hag‘s delight, this saw his team come from 1-0 to lead 2-1 for a period after Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo scored.

It wasn’t enough though, as Liverpool equalised through a pretty controversial penalty, so the game ended 2-2.

But looking at the positives, here are the three standout United players from the game.

Willy Kambwala

Probably one of the men of the match from a United point of view was 19-year-old Willy Kambwala who firmly established himself as the latest Carrington success story.

Despite having appeared this season already a few times, it’s against Liverpool that he’s emerged as a true first-team calibre player.

He was so solid in defence alongside Harry Maguire and regularly got the better of Darwin Nunez. Here are his stats from the game, as per FotMob.

  • 98 minutes
  • 29/36 passes completed (81%)
  • 46 touches
  • 2 clearances
  • 2 interceptions
  • 6 defensive actions
  • 3 duels won

Although in all honesty, these stats don’t do him justice.

His pace was also a real revelation considering how slow some of our centre-halves are.

He needs to be handed a start for the rest of this season as often as possible.

Andre Onana

The second player we have to praise the performance of is Andre Onana who kept the game competitive in the first half while Liverpool looked like running away with it.

He faced 28 shots, making six saves and preventing 0.85 goals.

He’s been so impressive lately that even his harshest critic, Jamie Carragher, can no longer deny Onana’s form.

He’s been so good for most of this season and this is just the latest example, but for his sanity, we hope next season sees the defensive structure much improved.

Kobbie Mainoo

As he so often seems to be, Mainoo was one of the standout players in red on Sunday.

He had a slow start and was partially at fault for Liverpool’s first goal as he left Luis Diaz free from a corner.

But he built himself into the game and more than made up for this mishap with his incredible goal which will be a goal of the season contender.

Outside of the goal, Mainoo’s stats were also decent, as seen via FotMob.

  • 85 minutes
  • 8.1 match rating
  • 1 goal
  • 2/3 successful dribbles
  • 14/18 passes completed
  • 3/5 tackles won
  • 2 blocks
  • 8 defensive actions
  • 3 recoveries
  • 8 duels won

Even on a day which saw United struggle to really string much together, being saved by two individual moments, Mainoo was very solid and deserves his place on this list.
