TV singer 'scared' fans with song choice before proving she's a real 'threat'

Nyachomba ‘Nya’ Muchai-Kinya held back tears ahead of her American Idol performance during Week 8. After making it into the Top 24 of the competition, Nya had a task on her hands when it came to her song choice and fans were “scared.”

American Idol season 22 star Nya didn’t seem afraid of the song she had to perform, but she was anxious to get on stage and sing in front of her fiancé. The two had been together five years but he’d never heard her perform before.

Nya impresses on American Idol

When American Idol fans were first introduced to Naya, she described herself as a “superstar,” and opted to sing Willow Smith’s Wait A Minute during her audition.

Nya hails from Kenya, moved to California, and now lives in New York.

She performs on Broadway but had the judges in awe of her when she didn’t show any signs of being a Broadway performer on the Fox show.

After nailing the song, Luke Bryan described Nya’s audition as his “favorite” of the year.

Nya is a ‘threat’

The judges were already excited to see “star” Nya move forward in the competition, so it was no wonder she went on to sing in Hawaii as one of the Top 24 artists.

Ahead of her performance, Nya said she was going to sing the late Tina Turner’s The Best.

She chose the song for her fiancé and said: “This is the first time he’s seeing me perform and that’s what I’m nervous about.”

Nya described her partner as being “the best,” adding: “Every day he finds a way to show that he loves me, to show that he cares.”

As the two filmed for the show, she said she “didn’t want to cry on camera,” but wants “the world to know” about their love.

Despite fans being “scared” of her big song choice, Nya pulled it off and hit all the high notes like it was a walk in the park.

Many people took to the YouTube comments section to say: “Shes getting better and better…shes a real threat to win this whole thing and be a star.”

More wrote: “She hits those high notes so effortlessly,” and others said the star is “the best” adding: “…if she doesn’t win I give up.”

Others took to a Reddit thread to say: “Okay Nya girl, I see you. Time to turn this mediocre karaokefest around.”

Nya continued to show her fiancé love, taking to Instagram to write: “Probably the most magical moment I’ve ever experienced.. being able to share this moment with you, sing to you, & feel our love overflowing on stage @johnnywantsitall you are the best and I’m so proud to call you my Fiancé oh yes, & happy birthday.”
