Newark Athletic Club runner Edward Buck sets a new record in the 10,000m as he eclipses the old record by over 20 seconds at the Stanford Invitational Meeting in San Francisco where he smashed the 29 minute barrier

Newark Athletic Club runner Edward Buck did the job on Saturday night at the Stanford Invitational Meeting in San Francisco where he smashed the 29 minute barrier for 10,000m finishing 17th in 28-58.

In the process, Buck set a new Newark record by over 20 seconds.

A spokesman from the club said the milestone was a great start to the season.

They added that Buck will be back from his period studying in the United States shortly and is likely to move up the distances to Half-marathon and Marathon.

The spokesman said they were looking forward to seeing him back training with the club again soon.

Members of Newark Athletic Club were at Sutton Park for the Midlands junior Road and Men’s 12 Stage Road Relay Championships.

First up was the juniors, who had athletes Owen Trehame, Ben Ludlam Olivia Lindsay and Isabelle Thorpe in the under-13 boys/girls race.

Amy Newbould represented the club in the under-17 race.

For most of the competitors, it was their first time running a 5k on a tough undulating course.

“All of the runners raced well and with talent like that in the ranks, the future is looking bright for the club,” said a spokesman from Newark Athletic Club.

It was then the turn of the senior men who were competing in the 12 stage relay which consists of four longer legs of 5.38 miles and then 8 shorter legs of 3.16 miles.

Despite a few withdrawals in the week, the team performed beyond their expectations with some members of the team carrying niggles and suffering from illness.

There were strong performances by Conor Pacey and George Hatton on the longer legs which set the team up nicely for the proceeding runners, Tom Marshall, Oliver Crampton, Rob Lindsay, Tim Bagguley, Ady Dix, Will Tucker, Tom Newbould, Adam Swallow, Marcus Chesterton and Chris Harrison.

A top 25 finish to guarantee qualification to the Nationals looked like a tall order at the start of the day, but the great performances continued with all team members racing hard and finishing in 23rd position.
