'Respect to him': Rio Ferdinand claims 24-year-old has proven plenty of Arsenal fans wrong now

Rio Ferdinand has suggested that he has to give some respect to one Arsenal player after the Gunners beat Brighton 3-0 to move top of the Premier League table on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta’s men cleared another significant hurdle in their push to win the title. Many may have earmarked their trip to the south coast as a potentially tricky tie, particularly with Roberto De Zerbi’s men thrashing Arsenal in the reverse fixture late last season.

It was another 3-0 away win this past weekend, with Arsenal getting some revenge.

And once again, Kai Havertz was able to make a major impact in the game.

Havertz looked lively from the early stages, doing brilliantly to create a golden chance for Gabriel Jesus.

And it would be the German who scored the goal to double Arsenal’s lead in the second-half. Unsurprisingly, Arsenal fans were quick to remind everyone of the criticism the club got for signing Havertz in the first place.

And speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand suggested that the 24-year-old deserves all kinds of plaudits for the way he has silenced his doubters.

“Shout out to Kai Havertz. Some of the fan base that he signed for didn’t even want him, wanted him out. He said do you know what, you’re going to have him, you’re going to have to respect me. And he’s doing his thing. Respect to him,” he said.

Kai Havertz may fire Gunners over the line in title race

Havertz has given Mikel Arteta a dilemma heading into the summer transfer window. He is someone who can go through hot and cold spells in front of goal. But right now, he is looking like someone who could lead the line for the title winners.

He has definitely stamped his authority on that position. And with that, there may be questions asked of what the future holds for Gabriel Jesus.

Jesus was the striker to take Arsenal into title contention. But Havertz may be the one to get them across the line.

Arteta must now be weighing up whether Arsenal do need another marquee striker in the summer after all.
