Sources: Graham Potter opts against joining Euro giants

HITC understands former Chelsea boss Graham Potter will not be taking charge of Ajax.

Ajax have endured a miserable campaign and things went from bad to worse over the weekend as they lost 6-0 to Feyenoord.

Ajax’s search for a new head coach has been ongoing after they appointed John Van ‘t Schip as interim boss in November – after they fired Maurice Steijn following the worst start in the club’s modern day history.

The Dutch giants have been assessing their options and HITC confirmed earlier in the year that they had held talks with Liverpool assistant boss Pep Lijnders – who told Ajax he was ready to leave Anfield and take charge, and that remains the case.

But Ajax, have been taking their time and have also considered legendary former player Frank de Boer and former AZ Alkmaar chief Pascal Jansen.

Potter says ‘no’

One of the other options has emerged as Potter and HITC understands talks were held with his representatives.

However, HITC is told that after discussions, Ajax were informed that Potter would not be joining them. HITC confirmed last month that Potter is ready to return to club management and that has seen German giants Borussia Dortmund emerge as an option.

Dortmund are set to move on from their current head coach Edin Terzic.

With Potter saying no to them, Ajax’s search will continue and their fans are growing increasingly concerned after their humiliating loss to Feyenoord – a record win for their Rotterdam rivals.

“It was tough, bad. We were inferior on all fronts – physically, on the ball. Feyenoord were much stronger in terms of intensity from minute one,” Van ‘t Schip told ESPN NL.

“We didn’t get into the game. This is a blow that we all have to accept.”

Scandalous

Ajax captain Steven Bergwijn admitted that the result was ‘scandalous’ and not accepable.

“The fact that we are putting this up is scandalous. The fans are not having an easy time this season. What hurts the most? That score of course, 6-0. Losing can always happen, but not like this. It is always a charged match,” he said.

“If you concede such childish goals, it becomes very difficult. We just help Feyenoord score goals. It is painful to say, but Feyenoord was also much better, that’s just how it is.”
