Niger: 30 security volunteers die in clash with bandits

At least 30 members of a volunteer security outfit known as Yan Sa Kai were allegedly killed by armed bandits in a fight that erupted at Dogon-Dawa community in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.

DAILY POST learnt the incident occurred on Saturday morning.

It was gathered that the Yan Sa Kai trailed the movement of the gunmen to their hideouts, where they were ambushed, leading to a gun duel.

Sources from the area told DAILY POST that the clash resulted in casualties on both sides.

“Though there were a lot of casualties on both sides, we cannot ascertain the actual figure from the side of the gunmen,” one of the sources said.

Confirming the development, the chairman of Mariga Local Government, Abbas Kasuwar Garba, described the incident as sad.

He explained that it happened when residents who are mostly farmers have started preparing for the farming season.

Garba urged residents of the council to remain calm as government will look into the circumstances that led to the incident.

However, efforts to get the reaction of the Niger State Government and the Police Command were not successful as at the time of filing in this report.
