‘Definitely dropped off’: Alan Pardew says £40m Tottenham Hotspur player needs to step up his game now

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur are having a wonderful season and could beat Aston Villa to the fourth spot in the Premier League table.

Tottenham Hotspur are fourth in the Premier League table at the moment with 60 points from 31 matches.

Spurs are level on points with Aston Villa, who are fourth and have played 32 games. I do not think that Manchester United stand a chance of beating Villa and Tottenham to the fourth spot.

Tottenham won their Premier League game this past weekend. Spurs beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

As expected, James Maddison started the match for Spurs. The £40 million (Sky Sports) England international playmaker was deployed in the centre of a three-man attacking midfield.

Maddison was not at his best, but the 27-year-old was involved in the third goal that Tottenham scored.

However, there was an unsavoury incident involving Maddison and Ryan Yates for which the former Leicester City playmaker should have been sent off.

While talkSPORT pundit Alan Pardew has praised Maddison for how well he has played for Tottenham this season, the former Newcastle United manager has noted that the playmaker has not been at his best since his return from a spell on the sidelines due to injury.

Maddison has scored four goals and given seven assists in 21 Premier League matches for Tottenham this season.

TalkSPORT pundit Pardew has said that Maddison has to step up his game in the final weeks of the season if he is to carve out a place for himself in the England starting lineup at the UEFA Euro 2024 finals.

Alan Pardew wants Tottenham Hotspur midfielder to step up his game

Pardew said about Maddison on talkSPORT (8:51 pm, April 7, 2024): “He (Son) has been terrific and so has Maddison, although Maddison has definitely dropped off since that injury.

“He is not having that same effect, and I think – we were saying earlier – if he is going to feature in the European Championship in the starting XI, he has got about six or seven games to get back up to form.”

James Maddison unlikely to start for England at Euro 2024

In my opinion, James Maddison is unlikely to start for England at the European Championship finals this summer.

There is no doubt that Maddison is a very good playmaker. He is a very creative player who could help Harry Kane score goals.

However, I do not think that England head coach Gareth Southgate is going to include him in the starting lineup, at least initially.

If all the midfielders and attacking players are fit and available, I do not see how Maddison would get into the team ahead of Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Phil Foden.

Let us not forget that Southgate has also Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford as his midfield/attacking options. Trent Alexander-Arnold can also play in midfield.
