'Don't be silly, folks': Biden takes shot at Trump infamously staring right into eclipse

U.S. President Donald Trump looks up toward the Solar Eclipse while joined by his wife first lady Melania Trump on the Truman Balcony at the White House on August 21, 2017 in Washington, DC.

President Joe Biden on Monday urged Americans to enjoy watching this afternoon's full solar eclipse — but he couldn't resist also using the opportunity to take a shot at former President Donald Trump.

In a post shared on his Twitter account, Biden informed his followers that "an eclipse is worth marveling at," before adding, "But don't be silly, folks, play it safe and wear protective eyewear."

The post then featured a short video of Biden looking up in the sky while wearing eclipse glasses.

This last was a clear dig to 2017, when then-President Donald Trump was caught on camera staring directly at the last total solar eclipse without wearing any protective gear, despite the apparent pleas from some of his aides.

Standing on the White House balcony with his wife Melania and son Barron as the moon moved across the sun, he was seen at least six times squinting up at the phenomenon and pointing. The whole family did have protective lenses, which they later put on.

A White House pool report at the time stated, "As he did so, one of the White House aides standing beneath the Blue Room Balcony shouted ‘don’t look!'"

The image went viral as it followed after a flood of warnings from medical experts had warned Americans of the dangers involved in viewing the eclipse. Looking at the sun, even when blocked by the moon, without proper eyewear can lead to permanent eye damage.

On Sunday, Trump posted an a campaign ad on Truth Social in which his own head apparently takes on the role of the moon, eclipsing the sun and plunging the nation into darkness.
