Adam Sandler's best comedy hits Netflix 'Top 10', and there's a sequel in development

There’s no denying that Adam Sandler is a supremely talented dramatic actor, proving so time and time again in the likes of The Meyerowitz Stories, Punch-Drunk Love, Uncut Gems, Reign Over Me, and more recently the strange sci-fi drama Spaceman on Netflix. However, there’s nothing that quite satisfies his longstanding core fanbase quite like his classic comedies. Speaking of Netflix, one of those classics is currently in the streamer’s ‘Top 10’ category, and I’d argue alongside lots of fans that it’s the funniest he ever made.

Happy Gilmore hits Netflix ‘Top 10’

Almost hitting the top spot at number two, Happy Gilmore is close to topping the Netflix ‘Top 10’ movies category right now, which compiles the most popular films currently streaming on the platform.

The 1996 American sports comedy is essentially one of the most iconic of the genre from that decade, and you’ll see it regularly top polls when fans are asked to vote for Adam Sandler‘s best-ever comedy.

In it, the actor plays the titular character, an easily provoked hockey player who learns he has a totally unexpected talent for golf, all thanks to an incredibly powerful swing.

When his grandmother’s house is under threat of repossession, it becomes apparent that the only way he has to save it is through entering a prestigious golf tournament and taking home the considerable cash prize.

Taking a page out of the beloved golf comedy Caddyshack’s book, Happy Gilmore goes further and dials up the fish-out-of-water comedy perfectly.

It’s actually quite remarkable just how many great jokes and iconic scenes they managed to package into a brief 92-minute runtime, and if you grew up in the ’90s, having this on DVD later in life was basically a rite of passage.

Although The Wedding Singer comes a close second for me personally, if any comedy across Adam’s career is a straight-up hole-in-one, it’s this.

Adam Sandler confirms Happy Gilmore 2

Call the movie’s recent addition to Netflix a convenience because Adam recently announced on the Dan Patrick Show that he’s working on a script for a Happy Gilmore sequel as we speak.

He co-wrote the original film with Tim Herlihy and the talented pair are collaborating once again on the follow-up.

“… We’re working on it,” Adam confirmed during the interview. “Me and Tim Herlihy are diligently trying to make a good reason for everyone to come and watch and have a good time. Netflix is excited about it. So, we’re working on it. We’ve got some good ideas. You’re definitely in it.”

He recalled that he and Tim have been “jamming,” working on the script, and that they “have a million ideas already. We just gotta make it a movie and make sure we’re excited about people enjoying it. It’s important, we love Happy, we don’t want to let anybody down. People have talked about this for many years… We’re going to work hard and make sure it’s good.”

We don’t have a plot or release date, but just knowing it’s in development is music (through the intercom) to our ears. ‘Til the night closes in.

Happy Gilmore is now streaming on Netflix.
