An escaped monkey has been causing mischief in Istanbul's old city centre.

"Fugitive monkey in Fatih," Turkish media wrote on Monday, sharing videos from Sunday of the animal wandering around a construction site and between buses. Fatih is a district of Istanbul. The animal resembles a Barbary macaque in the pictures.

A passer-by told the DHA news agency that he had encountered the monkey at a bus stop. People had lured it closer with biscuits, whereupon it had attacked them before running away.

The broadcaster Hürriyet wrote that the animal had been spotted in the Balat district, which is popular with tourists. Where the monkey came from and where it is currently staying was initially unclear.

There are no monkey species native to Turkey.
