Avoid Netflix's latest homepage recommendation, unless you're a fan of knock-off Fast & Furious movies

With an evening spare, I did what many of us tend to do and fired up the Netflix app in the hopes of finding some quality entertainment to unwind with. Opening it up, at the top of the homepage was an advertisement for a movie called Sniper: Rogue Mission. Never heard of it, I thought, but with Netflix saying that it’s a recommendation for ‘Fast & Furious fans’, I thought I might have an explosive, silly but above all entertaining watch on my hands. Sniper: Rogue Mission movie on Netflix

When selecting the Netflix homepage recommendation Sniper: Rogue Mission out of curiosity, the description read: ‘Fans of the Sniper and Fast & Furious franchises will enjoy this high-voltage, shoot ’em-up action flick about vigilante justice.’

Diving in, I was met with an underwhelming dud that, if Netflix is recommending, I figured I’d dissuade you from checking out in favor of better titles on the platform.

The 2022 movie stars Chad Michael Collins and follows Special Ops Sniper Brandon Beckett uniting with his former team to expose a corrupt agent who becomes entangled in a human trafficking organization.

I was unfamiliar with the Sniper franchise, but it turns out the original movie that started it all was released in 1993. Rogue Mission is actually the ninth in the series overall, so if like me you check it out and feel like you’re missing something, that explains it.

Now, I can’t say I blame Netflix for recommending the film on the basis of liking Fast & Furious installments because there are certainly parallels to be drawn between the two properties, especially with the humor.

However, my time with Sniper: Rogue Mission fell short of the experience I’d have with the larger-than-life, outlandish blockbuster spectacle of the Toretto movies, which have gradually strayed into the guilty pleasure category if anything.

If the film sounds appealing by all means go ahead, but go in with measured expectations, as it does have a 33% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. If you enjoy it, there are five other movies to stream in Netflix’s Sniper collection, so there’s that.

10 great action movies on Netflix

Although I can’t wholeheartedly recommend Rogue Mission to those in search of top-quality action escapism, there are some great movies from the genre streaming on Netflix that I’d suggest giving a try:

  • Bullet Train
  • Cold Pursuit
  • Extraction
  • Extraction 2
  • Kill Bill: Volume I
  • The Man From Nowhere
  • The Night Comes For Us
  • RRR (Hindi)
  • Triple Frontier
