On3 recruiting expert discusses USC’s recent surge on the trail

The USC Trojans have been on a remarkable recruiting run over the past two weeks or so. Since hosting some major recruiting weekends during spring ball, the Trojans have landed nine commitments since March 24 and climbed up to the No. 3 recruiting class in the country.

Several more top prospects were on campus this past weekend and USC landed Sunday commitments from running back Harry Dalton and athlete Daune Morris. The Trojans are trending for other targets following recent visits and On3 VP of National College Football Recruiting and Transfer Portal joined the Wiltfong Whiparound on Monday to discuss.

“These guys are just fantastic football players,” Wiltfong said of Dalton and Morris. “You just think about the playmaking possibilities and the versatility they bring to offensive genius Lincoln Riley’s offense and you’ve got to be pretty excited about that if you’re Julian Lewis and the USC coaching staff.

Wiltfong then discussed three other targets USC is chasing and where the Trojans stand.

On3 four-star receiver Romero Ison is coming off a visit to USC and the Trojans are seen as heavy favorites in the RPM.

“Ison is a 6-foot, 175-pound, two-way playmaker on the prep level with 10.8 speed in the 100-meter dash, runs 21.9 in the 200 and when you turn on the film, you see that speed,” Wiltfong said. “He’s running by guys, he tracks the football well, he works the middle of the field and he’s a threat to score whenever the ball touches his hands.”

Wilftong said “the Trojans are the one to beat” in Isom’s recruitment right now.

USC might also be in a good spot for four-star defensive lineman Trajen Odom.

“Lincoln Riley knows that if USC is going to win at the expectation and standard that this program has, they have to continue loading up on defense,” Wiltfong said. “Coach D’Anton Lyn, the new defensive coordinator, is making a fast impression with all their top targets.”

Wiltfong gave a tip of the cap to defensive line coach Eric Henderson in USC’s pursuit of Odom. He said Henderson is “as hot a name as their is in the country in recruiting circles right now because of his pedigree but then applying the relationship-building skills with his pedigree.”

Wiltfong said Odom sees Henderson as “one of the best defensive line coaches in the country” and added that USC is “in a good spot” for Odom as the Trojans go up against Ohio State, Oregon, Georgia and others for Odom.

And staying on the defensive side of the ball, one of USC’s top targets there is linebacker Riley Pettijohn, a four-star prospect who ranks as the nation’s No. 42 overall prospect.

Wiltfong said USC was a major player for the 6-foot-3, 200-pound prospect going into this past weekend’s unofficial visit and the Trojans didn’t hurt themselves at all.

“Talking to people that spent time with him coming out of the visit, USC is definitely in the middle of this one,” Wiltfong said, adding that some of the nation’s best recruiting programs are still in the mix. “He just recently ran a 10.7 100-meter dash, too, so he is a freaky second-level defender that is around the football. He would be a massive pickup for the Trojans as they retool this defense and try to put five-stars, top-100 recruits out there as they transition into the Big Ten.”
