'Going to argue': Chris Sutton totally disagrees with what Andros Townsend's said about Liverpool now

Chris Sutton has hit out at what Andros Townsend has said about Liverpool following their draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Liverpool missed the chance to go back to the top of the Premier League table. Of course, the Reds had the opportunities to blow Erik ten Hag’s side away before half-time.

Andre Onana had a good game. But there is no question that Liverpool’s attacking players let United off the hook, with all of them proving to be wasteful in front of goal.

Liverpool had 28 shots on goal, according to Whoscored. Just seven of those attempts ended up on target in the 2-2 draw.

Liverpool miss brilliant opportunity against Manchester United

For many, it may have felt like a real missed opportunity. However, speaking on The Monday Night Club, Luton Town winger Andros Townsend suggested that it is never a bad outcome to leave Old Trafford with a share of the points.

That proved to be something Chris Sutton strongly disagreed with.

“Anytime you go to Old Trafford, no matter which Man United you’re facing, it’s got to be a good point. And I don’t think Man United are as bad the general public and the pundits are making out,” Townsend said.

“So I think, yes, they could have won, should have won, had 28 shots and what have you, but it’s a point at Old Trafford, so I think they have to take it and move forward for the last seven games.”

“Look, I’m not going to argue with you over how intense the rivalry is. I’m just going to argue with you over where Manchester United are. That is not a good point, Andros. I don’t care what you and Rory say,” Sutton replied.

“Liverpool absolutely pummelled Manchester United.

“At the end of this season, and the rivalry does matter because of the needle between the two sides, I’m not disputing that, but at the end of the season, Liverpool will look back if they don’t win the Premier League on the games against Manchester United and think that’s where we lost it.”

One statistic looks particularly alarming for Reds

You can understand both perspectives. Based on how the three games between the two played out this season, it is staggering that Liverpool have not won one of the fixtures.

But United showed how dangerous their chaos can be in the FA Cup tie. And ultimately, Liverpool were minutes away from losing again on Sunday. Thankfully for the Reds, Mohamed Salah was able to score from the penalty spot.

Had Liverpool still been top before Sunday, you would argue that a point is a decent result. But the race is now out of their hands.

And with that, you have to say that Sutton is probably correct should Liverpool agonisingly fall short from here.
