The leaders of France, Jordan and Egypt called for a Gaza ceasefire in a joint opinion piece published on Monday.

"The war in Gaza and the catastrophic humanitarian suffering it is causing must end now," Egypt's Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, France's Emmanuel Macron and Jordan's King Abdullah said in the article published by the Washington Post newspaper.

"We underline the urgent need to bring about a permanent cease-fire in Gaza," the leaders continued, arguing that "violence, terror and war cannot bring peace to the Middle East. The two-state solution will."

A two-state solution foresees the peaceful co-existence of Israel and a Palestinian state, based on the borders of the Palestinian Territories occupied by Israel since 1967 - the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.

The three leaders argue that the option is "the only credible path to guaranteeing peace and security for all, and ensuring that neither the Palestinians nor the Israelis ever have to relive the horrors that have befallen them since the Oct. 7 attack."

Some 1,200 people were killed during attacks on Israel led by militants from the Palestinian organization Hamas on October 7, and according to Israeli media reports around 250 more abducted into Gaza.

Israel responded with massive airstrikes and a ground offensive, which have killed more than 33,000 people, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza, much of which has been left in ruins and on the brink of famine.

In a resolution binding under international law, on March 25 the UN Security Council called for an "immediate ceasefire" in the Gaza Strip for the first time since the start of the war six months ago.

"In light of the intolerable human toll of the war, we, the leaders of Egypt, France and Jordan, call for the immediate and unconditional implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 2728," al-Sissi, Abdullah and Macron said.

All hostages held there must also be released, they said, adding that they support the ongoing efforts of the mediators Qatar, Egypt and the US to bring about a ceasefire and an exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.
