While some conservatives have criticized former President Donald Trump for deferring the explosive issue of abortion from the feds to the states, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was filled with nothing but praise.

"I thought what he did, his statement was exactly right," Gingrich said during an appearance on Fox News. "People who read it carefully who read carefully and think about it — we are a country that has to have this conversation."

The 45th president delivered remarks about his new position despite taking credit for reversing the landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade that had assured abortion rights.

“The states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both," he said. "And whatever they decide must be the law of the land,” Trump declared. “Now, it’s up to the states to do the right thing.”

The more moderate, middle of the road position rankled some conservatives.

"President Trump’s retreat on the Right to Life is a slap in the face to the millions of pro-life Americans who voted for him in 2016 and 2020," Pence posted on Twitter/X.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of the anti-abortion Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, expressed frustration.

“We are deeply disappointed in President Trump’s position,” she said.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who has been a loud supported of Trump, also called out the decision, stating that he “respectfully” disagrees.

Trump counterpunched.

“Lindsey, Marjorie, and others fought for years, unsuccessfully, until I came along and got the job done," Trump wrote back in response. "Then they were gone, never to be heard from again, until now... The Democrats are thrilled with Lindsey, because they want this Issue to simmer for as long a period of time as possible.”

Gingrich, however,

"Most of the right to life leaders understand exactly what Trump is trying to do," he said. "He’s trying to reach the largest possible number of babies saved. He's trying to create the best possible environment in the current culture and in the current laws. And he's doing it in a way that is extraordinarily pro-life without alienating people with the kind of fear mongering that the Democrats have."
